A Technical Guide to Setting Conveyor Speed for Coating Production Lines

Conveyor speed is one of the key parameters affecting both production capacity and coating quality on a coating production line. If the conveyor runs too fast, workpieces may not receive sufficient spray coverage, resulting in uneven film thickness or incomplete drying and curing. If the speed is too low, throughput will decrease, energy consumption will increase, and the production capacity of the equipment may not be fully utilized. Therefore, the conveyor should not simply be operated at its maximum rated speed.

Production parameters should be determined based on factors such as hourly output, workpiece spacing, workpiece geometry, coating characteristics, and drying oven specifications. The initial conveyor speed should be established according to the required throughput and the spacing between workpieces or hangers, while ensuring proper coordination between upstream and downstream processes to avoid bottlenecks. Small and simple workpieces can generally run at higher speeds. For large workpieces with complex grooves, recesses, or internal cavities, a lower conveyor speed may be required to ensure adequate spray coverage and prevent missed areas or insufficient film thickness.

Powder and liquid coatings have different leveling and curing requirements, so conveyor speed should be validated through trial spraying based on the coating manufacturer’s application parameters. The time a workpiece spends in the spray zone should be coordinated with the spray gun flow rate and reciprocator speed. The maximum conveyor speed should also be evaluated based on the effective length of the curing oven and the required curing time. Heavy or thick-section workpieces may require additional time to reach the required curing temperature.

Sufficient leveling time should be allowed after spraying to reduce surface defects such as orange peel and cratering. After commissioning, coating thickness and surface appearance should be inspected, and the conveyor speed should be fine-tuned based on the inspection results. The conveyor chain must always operate within its rated load capacity. Large or heavy workpieces should not be conveyed at excessive speeds, as excessive movement or vibration may cause workpiece instability or even hanger disengagement.

For paint line manufacturers, the conveyor system should be designed with an appropriate speed adjustment range, sufficient load capacity, and automatic control functions to provide flexibility for different production requirements. For end users, process parameters should be properly documented and verified, with appropriate conveyor speeds established for different workpieces and coating processes.

Ultimately, there is no single “ideal” conveyor speed for every coating line. The appropriate speed is a process parameter determined by the workpiece, coating material, spraying equipment, curing equipment, and required production takt. Through systematic commissioning, process validation, and continuous optimization, manufacturers can maintain consistent coating quality while improving overall line efficiency and reducing operating costs.
